Atmospheric CFC, ccl4, and sf6 history updateJohn Bullister (NOAA/PMEL)
The following table is the tropospheric CFC, carbon tetrachloride and sulfur hexafluoride concentrations from 1908 to 2008 for the northern (NH) and southern (SH) hemispheres. The concentration values are mole fraction of the trace gas in dry air (in parts-per-trillion- ppt).
The CFC-11, CFC-12, CFC-113 and carbon tetrachloride concentrations from 1908.5 to 1999.5 are from Walker, S. J., R. F. Weiss, and P. K. Salameh. 2000. Reconstructed histories of the annual mean atmospheric mole fractions for the halocarbons CFC-11, CFC-12, CFC-113 and carbon tetrachloride. J. Geophys. Res., 105:14285-14296.
The values from 1999.5 to 2003.5 are from a recent update at the website: http://gaslab.ucsd.edu/pub/cfchist/ . The 1908.5 to 2003.5 concentration values are on the SIO-98 calibration scale. (Note: this is the calibration scale that most seawater CFC measurements are reported on).
The concentration values from 2003.5 to 2008.5 are based on recent CMDL atmospheric measurements tabulated at the website: ftp://ftp.cmdl.noaa.gov/hats/. For the northern hemisphere, we used reported values from the CMDL monitoring site at Mauna Loa, Hawaii and for the SH values we used values at their site at the South Pole. We minimized any differences in calibration scales between the SIO and CMDL data, by normalizing the 2003.5 to 2008.5 CMDL values to the SIO-98 calibration scale as follows: We calculated the CMDL-based annual change (in ppt) at mid year for each year from 2003.5 to 2007.5 and added these annual increases to the Walker et al. values (on the SIO 98 calibration scale) starting in 2003.5. For the 2008.5 value, we extrapolated the reported 2006.5 to 2008.0 CMDL changes linearly from 2007.5 to 2008.5.
For sulfur hexafluoride, we used the production/release data from: Maiss, M., and C. A. M. Brenninkmeijer. 1998. Atmospheric SF6, trends sources and prospects. Environ. Sci. Tech., 32:3077-3086. To obtain 1953.5-1996.5 NH and SH atmospheric values for SF6, we normalized the Maiss and Brenninkmeijer trend to the 1996.5 CMDL atmospheric values at Mauna Loa and South Pole, respectively (ftp://ftp.cmdl.noaa.gov/hats/). For 1997.5-2007.5 we used the CMDL measurements at these monitoring sites. For 2008.5, we extrapolated the measured 2006.5 to 2008.0 increase linearly from 2007.5 to 2008.5.
Because of recent updates at the SIO site ( http://gaslab.ucsd.edu/pub/cfchist/ ) and slight differences in atmospheric CFC and carbon tetrachloride concentrations CMDL reported in 2007 vs. 2005, some values I list for these gases in this new tabulation differ slightly from earlier versions.
