This scale is identical with the X85 scale for all measurements before 1986. Monthly means are derived from hourly and daily means selected to represent baseline (background) conditions. Annual means are simply the arithmetic mean of the monthly values calculated by CDIAC. Annual means are provided only for years with complete monthly records. Data for the period November 1970 to March 1972 are from measurements at Makara, a site on the west coast of New Zealand just north of Wellington. The site was moved to its present cliff top location at Baring Head in 1972 and data collection was re-established in December 1972. There is some evidence that the Makara site was affected by CO2 uptake into surrounding pasture land.
