-- EQPAC92, Spring, Master Database -- This file is a chronology of changes and/additions to the master database for the EQPAC92 Spring cruise. The data file accompanying this file has the basic structure of EQ92SPRX.DBF, where the X represents the most recent change in an alphabetical format. If the changes go beyond Z, the next change will be 1. Example: EQ92SPRC.DBF, or EQ92SPR3.DBF. This file you are now reading should always accompany the master datafile. Finally, a file with a .CSV file extent may be present which is usually a comma delimited file. The most recent changes are described immediately following this sentence. ==================================================================== May 25, 1995 (J. Hendee) Today marks the release of version O of this master database file. Following is the file structure of that file: Structure for database: eq92spro.dbf Number of data records: 2664 Date of last update : 05/23/95 Field Field Name Type Width Dec Index 1 STATION Numeric 4 N 2 SAMP_NO Numeric 6 N 3 OPS_NO Numeric 11 N 4 CAST Numeric 3 N 5 LAT_DEG Numeric 3 N 6 LAT_MIN Numeric 5 2 N 7 LAT_HEM Character 1 N 8 DEC_LAT Numeric 8 4 N 9 LAT_QC Character 1 N 10 LONG_DEG Numeric 4 N 11 LONG_MIN Numeric 5 2 N 12 LONG_HEM Character 1 N 13 DEC_LONG Numeric 9 4 N 14 LONG_QC Character 1 N 15 DATE Character 10 N 16 PRESSURE Numeric 7 1 N 17 CTD_SAL Numeric 7 3 N 18 BOT_SAL Numeric 7 3 N 19 TEMP Numeric 6 3 N 20 BOTTLE_PT Numeric 6 3 N 21 BOTTLE_ST Numeric 7 3 N 22 CTD_PT Numeric 6 3 N 23 CTD_ST Numeric 7 3 N 24 NOAA_TCO2 Numeric 8 2 N 25 N_TCO2_QC Character 1 N 26 PCO2_20 Numeric 7 2 N 27 PCO2INSITU Numeric 7 2 N 28 PCO2_QC Character 1 N 29 FM_TCO2 Numeric 4 N 30 FMTCO2_QC Character 1 N 31 FM_TALK Numeric 4 N 32 FMTALK_QC Character 1 N 33 FM_PH Numeric 7 3 N 34 FMPH_QC Character 1 N 35 RB_PH Numeric 7 4 N 36 NO2 Numeric 6 2 N 37 NO2_QC Character 1 N 38 NO3 Numeric 6 2 N 39 NO3_QC Character 1 N 40 SIO3 Numeric 7 2 N 41 SIO3_QC Character 1 N 42 OXYGEN_ML Numeric 7 3 N 43 OXYGEN_UM Numeric 6 1 N 44 OXY_QC Character 1 N 45 CHLORO Numeric 7 3 N 46 PHAEO Numeric 7 3 N 47 TOC Numeric 5 1 N 48 CTD_NO Numeric 3 N May 23, 1995 (B. Huss) Changed the field structure to match EQPAC 92 Fall master database. Deleted the fields FC_POC and PON. May 8, 1995 (B. Huss) Entered Dr. Zhang's nutrient corrections. May 3, 1995 (B. Huss) Changed all PCO2_20 and PCO2INSITU with -9.99 for PCO2_QC equal "4" (per Hua Chen's email). April 28, 1995 (B. Huss) Changed FMTCO2_QC to "9" when FM_TCO2 = -9 and NOAA_TCO2 = -9.99. Changed FMTCO2_QC to "4" when FM_TCO2 = -9 and NOAA_TCO2 > -9.99. Changed FMTALK_QC to "4" when FM_TALK = -9. April 27, 1995 (B. Huss) Changed the fields FM_TCO2 and FM_TALK (Frank Millero's TCO2 and TALK) from reals to integers. Wrote a small FORTRAN program to truncate (not round) his data and then merged this truncated data into the master database. Ran Jim's range checking program on the merged data. Manually entered Rik's corrections from the hard copy given me by Tom Lantry. April 23, 1995 (B. Huss) Merged Rik's latest NOAA_TCO2, N_TCO2_QC, OXYGEN_UM and OXY_QC update into the master database. Calculated OXYGEN_ML from OXYGEN_UM. April 13, 1995 (B. Huss) Merged the PHAEO and CHLORO data into the master database and sent a copy of the merged data to MBARI for verification. April 6, 1995 (B. Huss) Modified the database structure to include FMTCO2_QC, FMTALK_QC and FMPH_QC (QC flags for Dr. Millero's data) and initialized these fields to "2". April 1, 1995 (B. Huss) Merged the nutrient update (NO2, NO2_QC, NO3, NO3_QC, SIO3, SIO3_QC) into the master database. March 23, 1995 (B. November 10, 1994 (B. Huss) Modified the master database to include potential temperature and sigmatheta for both bottle salinity and CTD salinity. Initialized the four fields to -9.999. Calculated both sets of potential temperature and sigmatheta values and merged this data into the master database. November 7, 1994 (B. Huss) Merged F. Millero's TALK, TCO2, and pH data into the master database. This was a complete replacement of existing data in the database. A copy of the merged data was sent for verification. Received verification that the data was successfully updated. November 2, 1994 (B. Huss) Added QC flags for latitude and longitude. Intialized QC flags to "A" which means that latitude and longitude have not been reviewed. November 1, 1994 (B. Huss) Merged R. Byrne's pH data into the master database. This was a complete replacement of existing pH data in the database. A copy of the merged data was sent for verification. Recieved verification that the data was updated successfully. September 1, 1994 (J. Hendee) Version L of the Master database will be released today. Huss) Remerged Legs 1 and 3 of Doug's updated CTD data (the previous merged data was not converted from EXCEL to a database file correctly). Sigma theta was also recalculated and merged into the Master database. The following questionable trips should be noted: Samples 23804, 22224, 17805, 17806, 19105, 19008, 19009, 21701, 22506, 21201, 21202, 21701, 21702, 3406, and 3407 August 11, 1994 (B. Huss) Merged Doug Wilson's updated Leg 2 data (pressure, temperature, CTD salinity, bottle salinity, and bottle oxygen) into the Master database. Recalculated and merged potential temperature and sigma theta for the updated data. July 18, 1994 (B. Huss) Merged E. Peltzer's DOC update into the master database. July 1, 1994 (J. Hendee) Today marks Version K release to all PIs. July 1, 1994 (B. Huss) Merged updated pH data from Frank Millero into the database. Also recieved another TCO2 and Total Alkalinity update which was merged into the database. June 30, 1994 (B. Huss) Received another nutrient update from George Berberian which was merged into the database. The investigator specific QC flags for SIO3_QC are: C = Samples diluted for low silicate channel analysis D = Results obtained from high silicate channel questionable June 29, 1994 (B. Huss) Merged George Berberian's updated nutrient data (NO2,NO3,SIO3 and the QC flags) into the database. June 28, 1994 (B. Huss) Merged Frank Millero's Total Alkalinity and Total CO2 data into the database. Merged Ed Peltzer's DOC data into the database. June 27, 1994 (B. Huss) Hua Chen's FCO2 data was merged into the master database. The investigator specific QC flags for the FCO2 data are: A = No TCO2 B = No Potential Temperature C = No TCO2 or Potential Temperature D = Estimated TCO2 E = Estimated Potential Temperature A field for SIO3 (Silicilic acid or Silicate) and a SIO3 QC flag were added to the database and the updated nutrient data was merged into the database. June 22, 1994 (B. Huss) Tom Lantry gave me the corrected NOAA_TCO2 data which I merged into the database. All the QC flags have been changed to a one character alphanumeric field. The updated pH data from Robert Byrne was retrieved and merged into the database. Tom Lantry gave me a small list of errors to correct and I regenerated sigmatheta for the records which had corrected depth values. Two files now accompany the .DES files, one describes the QC flags (.QC) and the other describes the units of measurement (.UNI). June 17, 1994 (B. Huss) Rik Wanninkhof gave me the updated pressure, temperature, potential temperature, CTD salinity, bottle salinity and bottle oxygen data for Legs I and III of the EQPAC Spring 1992 cruise which were merged into the database. I also changed bottle oxygen values for sample numbers 7301 to 7324. Sigmatheta was recalculated. May 4, 1994 (B. Huss) I checked all the ops numbers in the Sample Log database against the ops numbers in each cruise report (Legs I thru III). After I verified that the Sample Log data base was correct, I corrected the ops numbers in the EQPAC Spring 92 database. (Values were double checked for accuracy.) Feb 25, 1994 (J. Hendee) Range Checker run on master data set and circulated to all EQPAC92 PIs for their input. I will try to run quality checks on that lats and longs before March 21st; I believe there are some errors here, but they will be checked against station logs, etc. Feb 7, 1994 (J. Hendee) Robert Byrne's pH data for Legs 2 and 3 were updated in the master datafile. Here is the most recent file structure for version J of the EQPAC92 Spring master datafile: Structure for database: eq92sprj Number of data records: 2664 Date of last update : 02/07/94 Field Field Name Type Width Dec 1 SAMP_NO Numeric 6 2 OPS_NO Numeric 12 3 CAST Numeric 3 4 CTD_NO Numeric 3 5 PRESSURE Numeric 7 1 6 CTD_SAL Numeric 7 3 7 BOT_SAL Numeric 7 3 8 TEMP Numeric 6 3 9 POT_TEMP Numeric 6 3 10 SIG_THETA Numeric 7 3 11 NOAA_TCO2 Numeric 8 2 12 N_TCO2_QC Numeric 2 13 FM_TCO2 Numeric 8 2 14 FCO2_20 Numeric 7 2 15 FCO2_SITU Numeric 7 2 16 FCO2_QC Numeric 2 17 FM_TALK Numeric 8 2 18 FM_PH Numeric 7 3 19 RB_PH Numeric 7 3 20 NO2 Numeric 6 2 21 NO2_QC Character 8 22 NO3 Numeric 6 2 23 NO3_QC Character 8 24 BOT_OXY Numeric 7 3 25 CHLORO Numeric 7 3 26 PHAEO Numeric 7 3 27 FC_POC Numeric 7 3 28 DOC Numeric 7 3 29 PON Numeric 7 3 30 STATION Numeric 4 31 LAT_DEG Numeric 3 32 LAT_MIN Numeric 5 2 33 LAT_HEM Character 1 34 DEC_LAT Numeric 8 4 35 LONG_DEG Numeric 4 36 LONG_MIN Numeric 5 2 37 LONG_HEM Character 1 38 DEC_LONG Numeric 9 4 39 DATE Character 10 ** Total ** 241 Jan 3, 1994 (J. Hendee) Updated file with Hua Chen's FCO2_20, FCO2_SITU and FCO2_QC fields. Range checker still shows some bad FM_PH values, some possibly bad NO2 values and some bad FM_TCO2 and FM_TALK values. Changed longitude degrees and decimal longitude at Station 12 from 119 to 109, as per Rik's guidance. Dec 12, 1993 (J. Hendee) Replaced bad sig_theta values (> 60) with -9.999. Inserted all updated NOAA_TCO2 (M. Robert's TCO2) and N_TCO2_QC (TCO2 QC flags) data from Legs 2 and 3. Eliminated conductivity field (CONDUCTIV). Changed CTD_SAL values of 28.035, 27.815 and 100.000, where corresponding BOT_SAL values looked reasonable ( ~35) to -9.999. Replaced the ops_no fields with 921301440 for the incorrect 931301440. Dec 10, 1993 (J. Hendee) Changed all -9.990 (NULL) values to -9.999. Changed all 0.000 values to -9.999 (NULLs) in fields fm_ph, fm_tco2, and bot_sal. Changed 99.999, 100.000 and 99.990 values in bot_sal to -9.999. These fields look suspect: NO2 (values over 3.0), FM_PH values (under 7.4, including some at ~5.8), FM_TALK (values ~8.0), Nov 16, 1993 (J. Hendee) Rik Wanninkhof alerted me to bad NOAA_TCO2 values that were submitted to me, and which were previously placed into the master database. Rik asked me to get merged AOML/PMEL total co2 database file from Tom Lantry and use those values. I got that file and, after replacing all previous NOAA_TCO2 values in the master database with -9.99, updated the master database with these values. I also replaced all QC flags for this parameter with -9, since the database I received from Tom did not have QC flags, and I was at this point not at all confident in the QC flags matching the data I received from Tom. The new master database file name is EQ92SPRH.DBF. I also received a pCO2 file from Hua Chen, but since I'm doing this whole thing at home while I'm sick, and don't have the requisite software to handle the .WK1 file, I'm just updating what I can because of the tight deadline (this Friday) that Rik has told me of in a MAIL message. Nov 9, 1993 (J. Hendee and B.Huss) Betty got Doug Wilson's Leg 1 and Leg 2 data from Evan Forde, created sample numbers for corresponding CTD casts and bottle numbers, then created a file for updating. I updated the master database from Wilson's database (via Betty) for the following fields: PRESSURE TEMP POT_TEMP SIG_THETA BOT_SAL O2 I then changed the name of the O2 field to BOT_OXY. Oct 28, 1993 (J. Hendee and B. Huss) Added field STATION. Generated a list of stations vs. casts vs. Sample Numbers, then merged with master. Oct 21, 1993 (J. Hendee) Need to add STATION field. Wilson's data had missing values as 9.99 instead of -9.99 (need to change that). Oct 20, 1993 (J. Hendee) Added fields CTD_NO and CAST. These fields were updated for Leg 3 only, at this time. The following parameters were updated from data set submitted by Doug Wilson: PRESSURE, TEMP, POT_TEMP, SIG_THETA, BOT_SAL, and O2 (for Leg 3 only). Oct 20,1993 (R. Wanninkhof) The fCO2 were recalculated in Oct. 93 using the updated TCO2 values. The fCO2,20 values are at a temperature of 20 C assuming a relative humidity of 100 %. The fCO2,situ values are the calculated values at in situ potential temperatures. All fCO2 values are flagged with a 3 (questionable value) or 4 (bad measurement). These flags will be removed once the fCO2 values can be inspected using updated bottle trip depths, temperatures and alkalinities. Total CO2 values corrected on shore and normalized to the Scripps reference materials by Lantry/AOML (leg 1) and Roberts/PMEL (leg 2 and 3) replace the original shipboard values. October 19, 1993 (J. Hendee) Re-merged station data with parameters data file to result (once again) in large data file with redundant station and location information. Decimal latitude and longitude fields added and calculated from existing lats and longs. All oxygens reading as 100.0 replaced with -9.99. All pressures reading -10.0 replaced with -9.99. Following fields removed from master datafile: RB_TALK, TDN, and all Thoriums. All Thoriums apparently were taken from stations different than those occupied for the samples represented in the master database, and will be submitted as a separate database. Field name DATE_WEIRD changed to DATE. Total CO2 (field NOAA_TCO2) from Rik Wanninkhof's and Dick Feely's groups added to master database after first replacing this field with -9.99s for the whole database. PCO2 field changed to FCO2_20 (fugacity at 20 deg. C). New fields added were FCO2_SITU (in situ), FCO2_QC (quality control flag) and N_TCO2_QC (NOAA Total CO2 quality control flag). QC flags for CO2 fields follow WOCE guidelines. July 27, 1993 (J. Hendee) Included nutrient update from Denis Frazel, and renamed data file EQ92SPRE.DBF. July 22, 1993 (J. Hendee) Betty used bottle salinities for the sigma theta calculations (immediately below). July 21, 1993 (B. Huss) I updated the master data file (EQ92SPRC.DBF) by replacing the sigmatheta values with sigmatheta values I calculated using a modification of a program written by Libby Johns which calculates both potential temperature and sigmatheta. The new data file is called EQ92SPRD.DBF. June 28, 1993 (J. Hendee) I updated the master data file (EQ92SPRC.DBF) with nutrient values from D. Frazel's nutrient file, but the following samples from his data file were not found in the master: 4242 6666 34101 34102 34103 34104 34105 34106 34107 34108 34109 34110 34111 34112 34113 34114 34115 34116 34117 34118 34119 34120 34121 34122 34123 34124 June 17, 1993 (J. Hendee) I discovered that there were duplicate casts 347, however the second set did not have any information in it other than location information. The duplicates were added at sea using OCCDMS, which is interesting, because I didn't think that was possible! Two separate files were made to conserve space: a) EQ92S_ST.DBF, which has station location information b) EQ92SPRB.DBF which is the most recent iteration of updates, minus the redundant location information.
