Sites are on forest industry land owned or leased by Rayonier, Inc. Location: Latitude 29( 44' N; Longitude 82( 9 W UMT Elevation: meters above mean sea level. Climate: Mean air temperature was xx.xx degrees C, with a range of xxx to xxx degrees C. Based on the air temperature data collected from 1995-2000, the mean annual air temperature measured at 14.0 meters on the Ameriflux towers was xxxx.xx degrees C, with a range of to degrees C. Mean precipitation for the Gainesville airport from 19xx-19xx was 1332 mm/year. Soil: Soils are classified as a ultic alaquod, and are sandy, siliceous, and thermic. Soils are poorly drained, acidic, and low in organic matter and available nutrients. A discontinuous subsurface spodic horizon (of organic origin) and an argillic horizon (of mineral origin) occur between 30-70 cm and 100 200 cm depth, respectively. Vegetation: The sites are plantations of slash pine (Pinus elliottii) that are managed for pulpwood production. Other coniferous species include pond cypress (Taxodium distans), longleaf pine (P. palustris), and loblolly pine (P. taeda). Other broad-leaved species include oaks (Quercus spp.), maple (Acer rubrum ), bay (Gordonia lasiantha), and sweetgum (Liquidamber styraciflua). Understory vegetation consists of native species reestablished naturally after site preparation, and is dominated by saw palmetto (Seranoa repens), galberry (Ilex glabra ), and wax myrtle (Myrica cerifera ). Other species include Gelsimium , Lyonia spp. and Vaccinium spp. Specific Sites: The Mize clearcut site: The Rayonier site had been growing since clearcutting and replanting in 1989. It was destroyed by wildfire in June, 1998. Meteorological data have been collected at the Donaldson site since August, 1998, and flux data have been collected since December, 1998. Mean canopy height at these sites was approximately 11 to 13 meters. Towers: The antenna tower is 15 meters high. The eddy flux measurement system is also mounted at 15 meters above the ground.
